Maserati has unveiled the first fully electric racing car in its history, the Tipo Folgore, with which it will participate in the Formula E world championship in the wake of the Gen3 era.
The single-seater was unveiled in a special event on the streets of Modena which is the home of Maserati. The Formula E debut comes 96 years after Maserati’s first single-seater – the Tipo 26 – which enjoyed a class win at the Targa Florio in 1926 with Alfieri Maserati behind the wheel.

The livery features a blue shade combined with white stripes, Maserati lettering, the Trident emblem, sponsor stickers, and the colors of the Italian flag on the sides of the bulkhead. The driver lineup includes Maximilian Günther and Edoardo Mortara who joined the Formula E series in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
As with all Formula E Gen3 racers that debut this season, the electric motors of the Maserati Tipo Folgore will produce up to 469 hp (350 kW / 476 PS), bringing up to 600 kW of regenerative power and a 95% power efficiency. Besides being more powerful, the Gen3 tips the scales at 840 kg (1,852 lbs) which is 60 kg (132 lbs) less than the discontinued Gen2. Maserati says that the track expertise, technology, and software used in Formula E will transfer to its high-end Folgore road cars.
The Maserati Tipo Folgore Gen3 will compete in Season 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Pre-season testing will take place in Valencia, Spain, before the racing debut in the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez City in Mexico on January 14. This will be the longest-running season of Formula E with 17 races. Besides Maserati, other teams that have already presented their Gen3 racers include Porsche, McLaren, Jaguar, and Nissan.
