This story includes renderings of a fictional Subaru Baja made by Theottle that are neither related to nor endorsed by Subaru.

For the first time in what feels like a long time, small, unibody pickups are having something of a moment in North America (don’t be so smug, the rest of the world). But that raises an important question: Who else should be making a small pickup?

Both Ford and Hyundai joined the fray recently with the introductions of the Maverick and the Santa Cruz. Neither is an unqualified success, but both have a lot of interesting qualities, and their sales figures suggest that there’s a hunger in the market for small, lifestyle-oriented pickup trucks.

Few automakers, though, have made small pickup trucks quite as interesting as Subaru. Between the Brat and the Baja, the Japanese automaker has proven that it knows how to make a really interesting, if not always spectacularly practical, pickups.

Theottle Design

Enter, the internet. YouTube channel, Theottle, has taken it upon itself to virtually modify, stretch, and massage the Subaru Crosstrek to find one possible answer for the question: What if Subaru made a new Baja?

The results, if I may editorialize, are pretty interesting. Based heavily on the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the Korean trucklet proves itself to be a good basis for turning the Crosstrek into a pickup truck.

Like the Santa Cruz, the results are mostly effective, but the need to suddenly make all of the design lines go perfectly flat for the bed is a bit jarring. The tailgate, too, makes the back end look like it stops quite suddenly.

There is, however, something fascinating about the design. Although it’s a little odd, the longer I look at it, the more appealing it is. Of course, the one major flaw with this rendering is that it’s a little more subdued than history has proven Subaru likes to be with a pickup truck. Where are the backwards-facing seats in the bed? The wild color-palette with silver body cladding? For maybe the first time ever, I actually think the issue with this rendering is that it isn’t wild enough!
