The new Honda Civic Type R has an MSRP of $42,895 plus a $1,095 destination fee but actually finding one for that price seems impossible.

A Reddit user named oObunniesOo on the hunt for a new Civic Type R has collated a list of U.S. dealers that have slapped the new hot hatch with some obscene markups, looking to cash in on demand for the car. Some of the markups are astonishing.

The list consists of dozens of dealerships, most of which the Redditor says he called, visited, or emailed asking about prices. No less than 6 of the dealers, consisting of Stevens Creek Honda, Long Beach Honda, Buena Park Honda, Car Pros Honda El Monte, Moss Brothers, and Findlay Honda North Vegas, are selling the 2023 Civic Type R with a $25,000 markup.

Most other dealerships in the list have hit the hatch with markups ranging from $15,000 to $20,000. The cheapest markup the Redditor found was $5,000 courtesy of Larry Honda Utah.

In addition to hitting the car with some hefty markups, many are selling the Civic Type R with dealership accessories, some of which total as much as $7,000. When you factor in an extra $5,000 in tax, titles, and other fees, most of the Honda dealerships spoken to have priced their Civic Type Rs at over $70,000. The highest listed prices found were $79,000 while the cheapest was $60,000, still a hefty premium over the MSRP.

The Honda Civic Type R is far from the only new hot hatch being hit with hefty markups. Indeed, the Toyota GR Corolla is also selling for well in excess of its MSRP with some dealers jacking up the car’s price by more than 50 per cent.
