Volkswagen’s electric lineup continues to expand as the company has announced plans to introduce their next EV on January 3rd.
The automaker is keeping details under wraps, but said they’ll show a camouflaged version of the vehicle on that date as well as reveal its name. Following the announcement, the company will invite CES attendees to “experience the next step in Volkswagen’s electrification journey” on January 5th.
That isn’t much to go on, but it’s possible Volkswagen will show the ID. Aero. This is just a guess, but the company unveiled the ID. Aero concept in June as a preview of the brand’s first global electric sedan that will be offered in China, Europe, and the United States.

A number of questions remain, but the concept was a premium mid-size sedan that rode on the MEB platform and featured a 77 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that allowed for WLTP ranges of up to 620 km (385 miles). The concept also had an aerodynamic design, which allowed for a low drag coefficient of 0.23.
While Volkswagen is playing coy, the car is expected to adopt the ID. 7 moniker and spy photographers recently caught a prototype virtually undisguised. It’s slated to be less extreme than the concept, but feature a streamlined design with flowing lines as well as flush-mounted door handles and aerodynamically optimized wheels. Inside, there will be a digital instrument cluster and a large freestanding infotainment system.
Specifications remain unconfirmed, but the U.S. model could echo the ID.4 and offer a rear-wheel drive variant with 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS). It could be joined by a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing 295 hp (220 kW / 299 PS).
