Audi is readying the new S4 Avant, and while it was conducting winter testing, our spy photographers were able to capture some shots of the new performance wagon. Overall, the car’s design is very much evolutionary compared to the current model but it looks like it’ll remain handsome, at least from what we can see of it.
Starting up front, the most prominent feature is a shorter, wider grille that we hate to admit is almost Hyundai-esque. Like the RS6 Avant, Audi‘s other hot wagon, the S4 Avant’s lower fascia features a larger trapezoidal intake at the center flanked by two triangular intakes on either side, both of which house a vertical air curtain on their outer edge.

The rear end is significantly more camouflaged, so we can’t really make out its design, but the quad tailpipes do indicate that this is an S model rather than just the standard A4. Other exterior details include a sharpened shoulder line, flush door handles, and a more dramatically sloped roof.
Inside, previous spy shots have shown that the new car will feature a squared-off 4-spoke steering wheel like the A8, as well as capacitive touch buttons for the door controls and a simplified center console with revised switchgear. Adorning the dashboard are two iPad-like screens: one for the gauge cluster and one for the infotainment. We hope this tacked-on solution is just a placeholder for the final design, but given the current interior design landscape in the industry, that unfortunately seems unlikely.

It’s still unclear as to exactly what will power the new S4, but based on the other prototypes we’ve seen so far, we at least know that it will be a V6. And based on the placement of certain components around that engine, it’s suspected that Audi will be carrying over the current S4’s engine, potentially with some minor upgrades and/or hybridization. That engine, a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6, makes 349 hp (354 PS / 260 kW) and 368 lb-ft (499 Nm) of torque, so it would be safe o expect at least that much power if not more from the new model. Should Audi choose to go the diesel route as they do with the European market, we could probably expect at least the current 342 hp (347 PS / 255 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque.
