While we have seen pickup conversions based on different kinds of vehicles, the Porsche 944 makes the case for the most unusual donor car. The pictured one-off with three axles, a removable roof, and several parts from various Porsche models is listed for sale in Germany, with an asking price of €175,000 ($188,508).
In an effort to justify the price tag, the owner explained that the conversion required approximately 2,500 working hours. It started in 1995 and was finished in 2021, with the resulting vehicle being street legal, having traveled 1,200 km (746 miles) since completion. But let’s check out the details.

The front end comes from a Porsche 944 S2 (1989-1991), but the headlights are sourced from an older but more special 924 Carrera GT (1980). The “Continental Orange” exterior shade is combined with black graphics. The six 17-inch BBS alloy wheels come from the 993 Turbo (1995).
The front end looks cool but the highlight of the conversion is the custom tail. The rear bed has a 2,050 mm (80.7 inches) long loading area that is covered in oak floor. The tailgate is functional, while the aluminum storage box can fit the removable roof. The bespoke body panels have boxy wide fenders above the rear wheel. At the back, there is a nicely integrated bumper, a towbar, a chrome tailpipe and quite generic round LED taillights.
Inside the two-seater cabin, there is a combination of black leather and orange fabric for the upholstery with contrasting stitching. Besides the removable roof, equipment includes heated seats and a reversing camera.
Under the bonnet lies a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter four-cylinder engine sourced from a latter-model-year Porsche 968 (1991-1995). The listing doesn’t say how much power does it make, but the mill produced 237 hp (177 kW / 240 PS) in stock form which is more than the 208 hp (155 kW / 211 PS) of the stock 944 S2. As we can see from the interior shots, the model is equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox. The two axles are driven, while all three axles are braked and feature KW coilover suspension. For those wondering about the extra axle, it comes from an Audi 200 Turbo and features a Panhard rod allowing it to steer, preventing uneven tire wear.
The Porsche 944 six wheeler is certainly a unique vehicle but the €175k ($188k) asking price is difficult to digest as it very close to the cost of a brand-new 911 GT3. Alternatively, with the same amount of money you can buy a Porsche 718 4.0 GTS and a Ford Ranger Raptor so you combine the best of both worlds. Still, none of these cars will turn as many heads as the 944 pickup.
