The transition towards electrification and away from internal combustion is a fact. It might be happening slower than some think but it is happening and when it’s complete we’re going to need a name for those who love them. Here’s what you think we should call those future ‘petrolheads’.
Some questions of the day get far broader responses than we initially expect and that was the case here. Among some 55 comments, we got a number of honorable mentions. Buzzards, Electroheads, Motorheads, Acidheads, and Infotecheads all got upvotes. None were as popular as our top five comments though.
JH kicks off our list with five upvotes and no downvotes on his comment “Sparky” which is delightfully old-school and forward-thinking at the same time. Duncan Streeter suggested a bunch of options including Rotorhead, Circuithead, Fusehead, and Chiphead. For his trouble, he got 10 upvotes and only one downvote.

Mmmoose and JESKO rejected the premise to a large degree. The former says that electric vehicles will be used as “buy it and drive it” appliances and cites the limitations of tuning that ICE cars aren’t typically constrained by. The latter says that the future looks bleak and that enthusiasts will likely continue to be centered around ICE vehicles. GT3Man2001 backed up this same general idea by saying that “Petrolheads will continue to drive petrol cars. Because they won’t be banned in our lifetime.”
For sure my favorite answer just barely missed out on the top spot by a single vote. ‘Depressed’ got 13 upvotes and it’s not hard to see why. As a person who really loves the performance capability of an electric car, I’ll be the first to admit that some of them can be a bit boring after a little while.
The top spot went to a more serious and still funny term, Voltrons. In fact, 14 of you gave that an upvote, and not a single person objected to the name. It might be a bit tongue in cheek but it’s as good a name as any it would seem.
