The Mazda6 is not available in the UK market anymore, putting another nail in the coffin of traditional sedans, following the discontinuation of the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia models.
Speaking to Autocar, a Mazda UK representative confirmed that the decision to drop the model from the UK range was taken due to the declining sales of the segment. Indeed, the difference in popularity between sedans and SUVs is more than evident. According to Jato Dynamics, between January and November 2022, the automaker sold only 4,104 units of the Mazda6 in Europe, compared to 32,636 units of the CX-30 and 27,828 units of the similarly-sized CX-5.

In the UK, the Mazda6 sold a total of 169,123 units in 20 years and across three generations. With the demise of the Mazda6, the only remaining options for D-Segment sedans in the UK market are the Peugeot 508 and the Skoda Superb, as the VW Passat is currently only available with the wagon bodystyle. Still, those who want to buy a four-door Mazda have the option of the smaller Mazda3 Saloon.
The current third-gen Mazda6 was introduced back in 2012, being updated twice in 2015 and 2018 with subsequent facelifts. Despite its age, the model remains available in certain European markets, as well as in Japan and Australia where it recently got a 20th Anniversary special edition. As a reminder, Mazda discontinued the model from its US range back in 2021 and has no plans of bringing it back.
Reports about the future of the Mazda6 nameplate are contradicting, as the Japanese automaker is currently focused on expanding its premium SUV lineup and offering more electrified options.
