Mugen is offering a wide range of products for almost the entire Honda range, so it was about time the tuner takes notice of the new Honda Civic Type R. The hot hatch concept debuted at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon featuring a number of upgrades.

Honda didn’t say much about the concept other than it “embodies the passion for Civic Type R by utilizing the motorsports know-how and technology that Mugen has cultivated”.

From the official photos, we can see that the Honda Civic Type R Mugen Concept comes fitted with a much more aggressive body kit. At the front, the highlight is the carbon fiber bonnet, featuring a number of supposedly functional air vents. The same material has been used for the pronounced splitter which connects to the central bumper intake. The splitter looks very similar to the one used by the Civic Type R that is competing in the Super Taikyu Series.

Mugen Takes Its Turn On The New Honda Civic Type R

Moving on to the profile, a set of wider front fenders with integrated vents is combined with new alloy wheels and deeper side skirts in exposed carbon fiber. Mugen also swapped the rather conservative rear wing of the stock Type R with a much larger one and added a rear bumper extension. The new diffuser houses a centrally-mounted round exhaust pipe that looks like it belongs to a racecar.

The tuner didn’t provide information about any mechanical or chassis upgrades, but the concept appears to be lowered hinting at a tweaked suspension. We can also see larger disc brakes with Brembo calipers behind the aftermarket alloy wheels.

The model might be showcased as a prototype, but Mugen is considering putting the components on display into production. After all, the tuner has yet to offer upgrades for the new Civic Type R, as it did with its predecessor. As far as we are concerned, the tuned hot hatch would make a great case for a one-make racing series. For now, the Honda Civic Type R Concept by Mugen is exhibited in Tokyo alongside Mugen’s modified Honda ZR-V e:HEV.
