The Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta will open a second driver development track to the public on April 1, expanding what is already a large facility.

This new circuit was designed by Hermann Tilke, famous for designing many of the circuits on the current Formula 1 calendar. It effectively doubles the length of the existing driver development course and has features inspired by some of the best roads and circuits found around the world.

Four instructor-led driving modules are found in the new 1.3-mile driver development track. The first is the Low-Friction Circle where attendees can experience understeer and oversteer on a polished concrete surface that’s more than 196 feet in diameter. Next is the Ice Hill which has an 8 per cent slope, computer-controlled water jets, and a low friction polished surface. An Autocross Area is also present in a large paved area with slaloms, acceleration zones, and cone obstacles.

The 1.3-mile Handling Circuit is the highlight. It has elements inspired by the Carousel from the Nurburgring, Laguna Seca’s Corkscrew, and some of the twisty sections of the Tail of the Dragon in the Smoky Mountains.

“We’re thrilled to expand our U.S. headquarters with a new track that delivers exhilarating driving experiences in Porsche sports cars,” president and chief executive of Porsche Cars North America, Kjell Gruner, said in a statement. “We have called Atlanta home for 25 years and this ribbon cutting will help mark that anniversary in the most exciting way possible, underlining our continued investment in Atlanta and the local community. It’s been a fulfilling journey to bring this track to life, with inspiration drawn from several iconic race tracks, such as the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, Daytona and Laguna Seca. Intended to allow guests to take our sports cars to the next level, the track will offer even more dynamic driving than its sister track and serve as a new brand experience for the public.”
