Trucks snaffled the first three spots in a top 10 list of most popular list of used vehicles in America in 2022. The Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500 scored first, second and third place in a top 10 dominated by pickups and SUVs.

The data comes from automotive search engine iSeeCars, which looked at almost 10 million vehicles aged between one and five years old on the road last year to determine which was the most popular. But besides collating a list representing vehicle popularity in the entire country, the data team broke the information down to show the popularity by class of vehicle and also how used car popularity varied between states and between major cities.

We’ve already mentioned the three trucks that hog the top three places on the overall list, but it’s worth highlighting that together they account for over 8 percent of the entire used vehicle market. The Jeep Grand Cherokee moved up from 12th to 10th place this year, but notice there are only two traditional cars and the best-placed of those, the Honda Civic, can’t manage higher than fifth spot, and falls one position from last year.

Turning to the SUVs that are elbowing cars out of the limelight, we can see that the Chevrolet Equinox maintains its top spot, but the Toyota RAV4 is catching up.

Few will be surprised to see that the F-150 heads the truck table. In fact the first five pickups all occupy exactly the same position they did last year. Truck buyers are obviously creatures of habit.

Notice anything about this list? It’s dominated entirely by Japanese brands, which remain committed to offering regular cars while domestic carmakers have shifted their attention to SUVs and crossovers in recent years.

Toyota so comprehensively dominates the hybrid table that there’s only room for one car from an alternative carmaker. That car’s the Ford Fusion, which was discontinued in 2020 and falls from first to second place this year.

Most Popular Used EVs in America

Tesla and its cars are never out of the news, but the reality is that the company’s four models together account for just 0.7 percent of the total used car market, versus 1.8 percent for the Honda Civic or 3.3 percent for the Ford F-150. Still, occupying four spaces in the EV table is an impressive showing, the only non-Tesla vehicle being the Nissan Leaf. But how different might this table look five years from now?

The F-150 also dominates the by-city data table, taking the honors in 24 metro areas, with the Chevrolet Equinox and Silverado 1500 and the Honda Civic also scoring well, albeit ranking miles behind. But those retiree hotspots, Las Vegas and West Palm Beach, Florida, help the Toyota Camry score two places on the chart.
