A 1989 Ferrari F40 truly unlike any other was sold by Barrett-Jackson at its recent Scottsdale auction, fetching an incredible $2.75 million.
The F40 is a true icon great but this particular example is different than most. It was delivered new to Ferrari dealer Kroymans Automotive in the Netherlands in November 1989 and 3 years later, was rebuilt for racing by Peter van Erp from Cavallino Tuning and repainted yellow.
The car was subsequently raced during the 1993 and 1994 seasons after being sold to Dutch Racing Promotions. In the mid-1990s, it underwent significant engine upgrade work so the twin-turbocharged V8 engine could deliver in excess of 700 hp. The car continued to compete through the 1998 season when it was owned by Ferrari collector Michel Oprey and underwent various other mechanical upgrades.
Images of the car provide a hint of just how significant the modifications have been. In addition to the Nardo Grey respray, it is sitting on new black center lock wheels and is also equipped with a distinctive hood that also houses the fuel cap. Elsewhere, this F40 is rocking a set of slim new wing mirrors and the rear end has been transformed with a towering carbon fiber rear wing.

The interior looks just as immaculate as the exterior. Inside you will find a pair of carbon fiber racing seats trimmed in blue. There are also red Sabelt racing harnesses, a gated shifter, and a simple three-spoke steering wheel. As far as interiors of road-legal production cars come, you’d be hard-pressed to find one more driver-focused than this.
Barrett-Jackson notes that the car can be tuned to deliver almost 1,000 hp, more than double its original output.
