Today we have three big qualifiers in our question of the day. It’s gotta be American. It’s gotta be a sedan. And it’s gotta be a performer. What’s the greatest performance sedan to ever come out of the USA? The options are numerous.
Beyond the three central tenets of our discussion today we should say that we specifically mean a four-door car when we say sedan. We’re not talking about wagons or crossovers of any kind. With that said, let’s get on to some of the very obvious candidates in this argument.
The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing might be the first car that popped into your mind when you read this article’s title. Aside from its handbuilt 6.2-liter supercharged V8 and its Magneride 4.0 suspension, this beast can also be had with a stick shift. And none of that is to say anything of its luxurious cabin and advanced technology.

The Dodge Charger Hellcat might get some votes for its sheer audacity but we think that the cabin and the old-school platform will probably keep it low on the final tally sheet. Could an older sedan like the Chevy SS perhaps be a dark horse in this race? Sure, it was built in Australia, but even then, an American company was at the helm. If made in America is all that’ll do though we have one last suggestion.
Frankly, it’s hard, if not impossible to not include the Tesla Model S Plaid in this conversation. Before you go all keys a blazing take just a moment and forget whatever ire you might have for the brand in general or its, shall we say, bombastic CEO.
Focus in on what the Model S Plaid actually represents as a car. For a time, it was the fastest accelerating production car on earth and it’ll still embarrass anything that Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Porsche can throw at it in a straight line. And aren’t we all lovers of a drag race over here? That might just make it the greatest American performance sedan of all time.
Sure, the Lucid Air Sapphire is faster but how many of those has the brand actually delivered? Still, we know that the options are plentiful. Which American performance sedan is the best in your eyes and why? Let us know in the comments below.
