Performance hatchbacks are hot commodities right now and perhaps none are as sought after as the Honda Civic Type R. We’ve covered how dealerships across the nation are greedily asking for huge markups on the car. Now, one has popped up on auction and the original owner paid $20k over sticker for it. We’re about to find out if it was worth that in the eyes of the free market.
There’s no question that the Honda Civic Type R is one of the most exciting new cars on the market. It packs 315 hp (234 kW), a six-speed manual transmission, and high-end performance parts into a practical package that can be daily driven. As a result, finding one for MSRP is next to impossible right now.
Case in point, the person selling this Sonic Grey Pearl example on Cars & Bids who seems to have paid some $20,000 over MSRP to obtain it. In total, the window sticker indicates a final price of $67,678.95 for this particular Honda Civic. For reference, there are a number of new or lightly used Audi RS3s on the market for that much or less.

Clearly, though, the seller thought that the deal would be worthwhile. For their money, they got all of the best features that the Type R has on offer from the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires to the Brembo front brakes, the limited-slip differential, and the adaptive dampers.
Still, that hasn’t stopped the comment section from blowing up over the insane markup on a car that Honda says should go for about $44k. It’s been so volatile with comments about how one could better spend nearly $68k that Cars & Bids has stepped in to remind people to focus on the car in the auction.
It will be interesting to see whether the seller gets all of their money back out of the car. With five days left in the auction, the Type R is already sitting at a high bid of $47,000. We’ll keep an eye on it to see where it ends up.
