Crossovers might be king, but high-performance wagons have a dedicated following. Slotting somewhere in between is this 2024 Mercedes-AMG E53 Estate, which won’t be as extreme as the upcoming E63 but will be spicier than the standard model.
Recently spied undergoing testing, the wagon sports a Panamericana grille as well as what appears to be an aggressive front bumper with large air intakes. While the latter are hard to see, there’s no mistaking the 20-inch gloss black wheels that are shod in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires and backed by a high-performance braking system with ventilated discs as well as red calipers. If those features didn’t scream AMG enough, there’s a quad exhaust with circular tips.
Besides the special touches, the wagon has sweptback headlights, sporty side skirts, and a familiar greenhouse. They’re joined by a long sloping roof, streamlined bodywork, and an evolutionary rear end.

Spy photographers didn’t get a look inside, but the cabin should echo the sedan and feature a freestanding digital instrument cluster as well as a large infotainment system that draws inspiration from the massive MBUX Hyperscreen. The focus on screens also results in reduced switchgear, although Mercedes will provide dedicated audio controls.
As you can tell by the charging port, the E53 is embracing electrification and will adopt a plug-in hybrid powertrain. There have been conflicting rumors about the setup as initial speculation suggested the model would echo the C63 and have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a combined output of around 671 hp (500 kW / 680 PS). However, more recent reports have indicated the car could use a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine and have a combined output of approximately 510 hp (380 kW / 517 PS).
