Hyundai published revealing teasers and information about the sixth generation of the Verna that will soon become available in India. The petrol-powered sedan gains upmarket looks and technology compared to its predecessor which was known as the Accent in North America.
The Hyundai Accent was axed from North America last year, but in markets like India, there is still sufficient demand for budget-friendly sedans. Thus, Hyundai upgraded every aspect of the Verna, in order to keep up with the strong competition.

The dark teasers show a sleek sedan, borrowing styling elements from larger models and incorporating the “‘Sensuous Sportiness” design language. At the front, we find split headlights including the characteristic full-width LED bar of Hyundai models, with a grille similar to the Elantra. The latter also served as the inspiration for the profile, judging from the windowline as well as the sharp lines on the tail and rear fenders. Finally, the rear end gains modern LED taillights, with “Verna” lettering integrated into the full-width cluster.
We don’t get to see the interior of the Hyundai Verna yet. However, local media Rushlane reports it will feature a digital instrument cluster combined with a large infotainment touchscreen, plus other goodies including ventilated front seats, a sunroof, auto climate control, and ADAS which will be a first for the segment in the region.
Hyundai confirmed that the new Verna will be available as a petrol-only affair, discontinuing the diesel options of the previous generation. The new engine lineup includes a naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter MPi, and a more powerful turbocharged 1.5-liter T-GDi that will also be compatible with E20 fuel.
The company doesn’t mention the power outputs, but the naturally aspirated unit is expected to produce 113 hp (83 kW / 115 PS), and the turbocharged motor as much as 158 hp (118 kW / 160 PS). Both will come standard with a six-speed manual gearbox sending power to the front axle. Optionally, Hyundai will offer the Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) automatic for the 1.5 MPi, and the seven-speed DCT automatic for the 1.5 T-GDi.
Hyundai has already started accepting bookings for the new Verna in India, with a market launch expected in April or May 2023. Rivals of the Hyundai Verna in the Indian market include the recently updated VW Virtus, the Skoda Slavia, as well as the Honda City and Suzuki Ciaz.
