BMW stirred up some real controversy with its new XM hybrid. Some love its bold, in-yer-face face, while others think it looks heavy, heavy-handed and just plain ugly.
If you’re in the latter camp, there’s a chance BMW’s latest announcement may change your mind. The automaker has confirmed that the first standalone M car since the M1 supercar of the early 1980s will be available to order with paintwork from BMW’s Individual range starting in April 2023.

The SUV is built at BMW’s North American plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, but vehicles ordered with BMW Individual paint have to go through a separate build process that involves a more hands-on approach by BMW’s technicians to ensure the body surface is suitably prepped before painting, and that the finish lives up to the promise of the extra cost.
