The 1985 Toyota Pickup from Back to the Future would look just as great in today’s retro car scene as it did on the silver screen when it was new. And as an homage to that legendary truck, someone outfitted a Ford Maverick to a nearly identical spec.
Built by VIP Auto Accessories, this Maverick is obviously from a different manufacturer than the Toyota of Marty McFly’s desire, but they’re quite similar in spirit in the sense that they’re both small utilitarian trucks for the masses. That being said, where they’re most alike is in their looks.

To emulate the famous Toyota, this Maverick first donned an all-black paint job, with the trim pieces, badging, and brake calipers receiving the same treatment. On top of that, it adds to the “OEM+” look with a 2-inch lift kit, new wheels, and all-terrain tires. Granted, Back to the Future’s hero truck didn’t have bronze wheels, but we’ll give the Maverick a pass since it’s in keeping with the overall look. The biggest tell that this Maverick is supposed to hearken back to the Toyota pickup is the bed-mounted Keko sport bar with KC pod lights.
The baby Ford pickup also has some nice touches of its own, like the spray-in bedliner, hood scoop, tinted windows, custom Raptor-style grille and tailgate applique, and orange clearance lights that are typically reserved for vehicles over 80 inches in width.

If there’s one glaring difference between these two trucks, though, it’s their power. While it isn’t specified whether the Maverick is the 2.5L hybrid or the 2.0L turbo, even the less powerful hybrid bests the ’85 Toyota’s 116 hp (118 PS / 87 kW) and 140 lb-ft (190 Nm) of torque by 75 hp (76 PS / 56 kW) and 15 lb-ft (20 Nm) respectively. Going even further, the Maverick’s 2.0L turbo engine beats the Toyota by 134 hp (136 PS / 100 kW) and 137 lb-ft (186 Nm).
