Mercedes announced a free over-the-air software update for the MBUX infotainment in the C-Class and S-Class models, which includes new artificial intelligence features that were already available in the EQE and EQS, as well as the later model year examples of the ICE-powered sedans.
The highlight of the OTA is the addition of the “Zero Layer” feature on the MBUX infotainment. This uses artificial intelligence to place the most useful applications at the top menu level on the home screen, according to the situation and the context, so the user doesn’t have to scroll through the sub-menus.
Mercedes says that the AI gets to know the driver, remembers its preferences, and uses them to make personalized suggestions for different comfort and vehicle functions. For example, if the driver makes a specific phone call while returning home from work, the MBUX will suggest it with a shortcut at the exact same time. If the driver doesn’t want to use the suggested shortcut or is not interested in continuing this habit, they can respond with the “Do not suggest now” or “Do not suggest again”.
The update is compatible with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W206), S-Class (W223), and Maybach S-Class (Z223) produced in 2021, as later models already have it installed from the factory. Owners of those models will be notified about this option through the Mercedes Me application and through the MBUX infotainment. The good thing is that whoever opts for the update can always switch back and forth between the interfaces.
Mercedes-Benz has been offering over-the-air updates since 2013, with the feature being widely used by most automakers in the past few years. This allows them to improve the functionality of their existing offerings, and make the update available to all customers without waiting for a mid-lifecycle refresh or a new generation model.
