The Peugeot 508, one of the few remaining models in the midsize sedan segment in Europe, will live to see another generation in the form of an EV-only proposal. The new model set to rival the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and the VW ID.7 is expected to debut after 2025, since a facelift for the current generation is already planned for later this year.
While most rival offerings including the Ford Mondeo and the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia have been discontinued from the UK and Europe, Peugeot is not willing to abandon the segment. Its CEO Linda Jackson has pledged to retain all of the current model lines in the automaker’s future range, all but confirming a new generation of the 508 in both fastback and SW bodystyle flavors.
The French automaker actually teased the upcoming sedan alongside other future EVs in a recent presentation about its future product plans. Predictably, the entire lineup will incorporate the new styling language which was introduced by the Inception concept, alongside the latest technologies from Stellantis’ parts bin.

In an effort to get a better look at the sporty sedan, we zoomed in on the top left corner at the official teaser. We should note that the pictured vehicle is nothing more than a mockup since the model is still in the early stages of development. However, it gives us a good idea of how the model will look when it arrives in a few years’ time. The teaser shows a sleek body and sexy proportions thanks to the low-slung silhouette, the premium look of the surfacing, and the large-diameter alloy wheels. The latter are shared with the Inception concept, as with the three-claw lighting signature at the front including the illuminated grille and emblem.
According to Autocar, the successor of the 508 could get a higher-riding stance, making it more desirable to buyers who are obsessed with SUVs and crossovers. At the same time, the sedan bodystyle will make it more aerodynamic than conventional SUVs, making it more efficient.
The interior is expected to feature recycled materials for the upholstery, futuristic styling inspired by the concept, and an advanced infotainment system that will be highly upgradeable. Peugeot wants to extend the lifecycle of its next-gen EVs which is why designers are looking for ways of refreshing some of their components – including the cabin – along the way.
Peugeot’s new EV will ride on the new STLA architecture, as the current EMP2 platform that harks back to the PSA era will be discontinued together with the last ICE-powered models. The new underpinnings will allow greater range figures, faster charging rates for the battery pack, increased power output from single or dual electric motors, as well as compatibility with advanced autonomous driving systems. The most fitting scenario for the EV sedan/estate is the STLA Medium architecture, set to offer up to 700 km (440 miles) of range and between 168-241 hp (125-180 kW / 170-245 PS) of power from each electric motor.
The current second generation of the Peugeot 508 was originally introduced in 2018 featuring a low-slung five-door fastback coupé-saloon bodystyle and an estate derivative. The last ICE-powered sedan by Peugeot will be facelifted in 2023 with mild styling updates and a heavily electrified powertrain mix that will include mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.
Peugeot has pledged to offer EV variants of its entire range by 2025, before becoming an EV-only automaker in Europe by 2030. This likely means that the upcoming facelifted Peugeot 508 could be offered side by side with its EV-only counterpart for a few years. It remains to be seen whether Peugeot will use the E-508 nameplate for the next-gen model, or if it make a switch to a new naming strategy for its future EVs.
