BYD is in the midst of developing its very first electric/hybrid pickup truck and these spy shots show it being tested for the very first time.

This heavily-camouflage prototype was recently snapped testing in China and while the company’s engineers have done a good job at hiding its design, we can see that it adopts a dual-cab design and has quite a boxy shape. This is particularly evident at the front end where there looks to be quite an upright front grille as well as square-shaped headlights.

Elsewhere, these images from Car News China show that the pickup’s hood is relatively short and that it will be equipped with squared wheel arches. The side windows also adopt an angular design while the bed itself appears relatively compact. A pair of roof rails are also visible on this prototype, as are side steps.

It is understood that BYD will sell both plug-in hybrid and all-electric variants of the pickup truck with both rear- and all-wheel drive on offer. Local media suggests that the plug-in hybrid will pair an electric motor with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. Horsepower may vary from 180 hp to as much as 500 hp for the flagship model.

Just a single image of the pickup’s interior was snapped. It shows the pickup with a digital instrument cluster as well as a large infotainment system sitting in the center of the dashboard.

It is understood that the new BYD could be previewed through a concept at September’s Chengdu Auto Show. It could then launch in China in the final quarter of the year.
