Following the reveal of the first official trailer for Fast X, the upcoming, penultimate installment in the Fast Saga, series star and producer Vin Diesel gave audiences a few hints as to what will come in the franchise’s final film, and it could be autonomous.
“Without telling you too much about what happens in the future, there’s a character who is the antithesis of Dom who is promoting AI and driverless cars and a philosophy that with that goes your freedom,” Diesel told Variety. “There is somebody that believes that’s the future, and that’s at direct odds with the Toretto mentality.”
Asked about who his dream actor for the role is, Diesel answered, through a pained expression, that he wanted Robert Downey Jr. No stranger to huge stars like Rita Moreno, Brie Larson, Dwayne Johnson, and more, the series’ casting department apparently has a lot of sway in Hollywood.

Asked if he had approached Downey about the role, Diesel feigned outrage, jokingly saying, “How dare you ask me this question in front of all these people? I have pride and I have dignity.”
As the Fast saga’s most public-facing producer, Diesel’s words carry some weight. One of the architects behind the series’ recent success, it shouldn’t surprise fans if Robert Downy Jr. does end up in the next film. The actor and producer, though, has had to learn that he can’t get everyone he wants in his film – see his public feud with Dwayne Johnson.
Asked the same question, meanwhile, series co-star Michelle Rodriguez answered that she’d like to see Matt Damon in a film. Soon to lead her own Fast Saga spin-off, Damon’s manager’s ears may have perked up at the suggestion.
Either way, we won’t know for a while if these dream casting scenarios become real. Fast X, planned to be the second-last, non-spin-off Fast & Furious film in the franchise, will premiere on May 19.
