Following SsangYong Motor’s acquisition by KG Group last year, the automaker has changed its name to KG Mobility signaling the beginning of a new era. The reborn South Korean SUV maker will focus on electric vehicles, self-driving tech, and artificial intelligence. KG Mobility will launch no less than 16 concepts and production vehicles at the Seoul Mobility Show on March 30, where we will learn more details about its future strategy.
The final decision about the name change was taken at the general shareholders’ meeting, held in Pyeongtaek, South Korea on Wednesday. KG Mobility will feature a new version of SsangYong‘s twin-ring logo which has already been applied on some of the existing SUVs. The new brand slogan that will be used on promotional material will be “Go Different. KG Mobility”.

According to the announcement, KG Mobility wants to expand its operations beyond “traditional automobile manufacturing and sales”, becoming a mobility firm as suggested by its name. More specifically the company will focus on new technologies dictated by the latest trends in the automotive industry, including EV-dedicated platforms, SDVs (Software Defined Vehicles), self-driving cars, and artificial intelligence. KG Mobility will also enter new business sectors, selling certified used cars from the second half of the year, and special-purpose vehicles in the near future.
Among the 16 concepts and production vehicles that will be showcased at the Seoul Mobility Show, there will be the new Torres EVX production model, next to three more EVs – most likely concepts – called KR10, O100, and F100. We also expect to see modified versions of some of the existing SsangYong models. Following the debuts, the KG Mobility Design Contest will help the brand decide on its future design language, with the winning proposals set to be announced this June.
From Ha Dong-Hwan Motor To Dong-A Motor And SsangYong Motor
This is not the first name change for South Korea‘s SUV maker. The company was originally founded in 1954 as Ha Dong-Hwan Motor, was renamed Dong-A Motor in 1977, and finally got the SsangYong Motor name in 1988. Over the next 35 years, it passed under the control of Daewoo Group, SAIC, and Mahindra. Following a long search for buyers and a failed takeover by Edison Motors, SsangYong went bankrupt, before being saved by KG Group who bought the majority stake in August 2022.
