Mercedes-Benz has just issued a recall for various GLE and GLS models in the United States for a problem that has troubled the car manufacturer in the past.
This new recall, impacting a total of 70,225 vehicles across the United States, relates to the trim on the rear windows. A notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notes that a deviation in the assembly process means the trim bars on the rear door windows might not be fastened in accordance with current production specifications. As such, the trim bar may separate while the vehicle is being driven.

This is not the first time that such an issue has prompted Mercedes-Benz to recall certain GLE and GLS models. Indeed, it issued a recall for the same issue just six months ago, albeit the production dates of vehicles involved in that recall were from May 20, 2019, to April 7, 2022, while those in the latest recall are from January 29, 2022, to February 14, 2023.
Involved in this recall are GLE 350 models (32,127 units), the GLE 450 (6,049 units), GLE 580 (247 units), GLS 450 (16,527 units), GLS 580 (548 units), Maybach GLS 600 (805 units), AMG GLE 53 (11,053 units), AMG GLE 63 S (2,017 units), and 852 examples of the AMG GLS 63.
Mercedes-Benz says it is aware of 11 claims related to the issue, including warranty claims, field reports, and service reports but does not know of any crashes, injuries, or third-party damage caused by the trim bar separating.
Owners of impacted vehicles will be notified of the recall before May 16, 2023, and encouraged to visit a Mercedes dealer. The installation of the trim bars will be checked and if necessary, reworked.
