Toyota is recalling around 130,000 Tundra trucks from the 2022 and 2023 model years that were equipped with a factory tonneau cover. According to the automaker, some of these recalled trucks may have a defect that causes the cover to come off while driving. It says owners should remove the cover themselves and wait for further instructions.
It’s worth noting that the cover involved here is what Toyota describes as a ‘genuine truck bed accessory tonneau cover.’ That suggests that those with aftermarket options may be completely unaffected and safe to use their cover without concern. Toyota doesn’t say exactly what has caused the issue either.
In fact, it actually dropped this news before the NHTSA released any details about the situation. With that in mind, we’re not sure how Toyota found the problem, when it found out about the issue, or if there are any associated accidents or injuries.

What it does tell us is that owners of involved vehicles will be notified by late March of this year. Despite the fact that, as of this writing, there’s no info on this recall at NHTSA, which is where Toyota suggests owners check on whether or not their vehicle is included in the recall. Owners can also call the Toyota Brand Engagement Center at 1-800-331-4331.
The company says that owners of affected trucks “will be instructed to remove the cover until the remedy is available and implemented.” That remedy isn’t ready yet according to Toyota. We’ll keep an eye out on the NHTSA website and update this post with further information when we have it.
Notably, this recall has nothing to do with the other recall Toyota issued for the Tundra on Feb 22nd surrounding LCD monitors.
