Spring is in the air and BMW has brought the 2025MY 1-Series out to play. Spied undergoing testing in Europe, the redesigned hatchback is instantly recognizable as the biggest change appears to be a streamlined front end. While the prototype is heavily camouflaged, we can see a smaller grille and sleeker headlights. They’re joined by a new front bumper that features a prominent central support as well as two horizontal bars.
The profile looks like a spitting image of the current car, but it appears there will be sleeker bodywork and an evolutionary greenhouse. We can also expect updated wheels and the two-tone design on this prototype is rather fetching.

The déjà vu design appears to continue out back, but it’s hard to be certain with all that camouflage. Regardless, the model has a rounded hatch, wraparound taillights, and a hidden exhaust system – at least on this prototype.
Previous spy photos have given us a glimpse inside and the model is slated to follow in the footsteps of the 2-Series Active Tourer. This means we can expect a classier cabin with a Curved Display, which likely consists of a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment system. The model will also have a minimalist shifter, a rotary volume controller, and easily accessible USB ports.
The 1-Series has been undergoing testing for months and the model was originally believed to be a facelift, given the relatively small changes. However, it’s being redesigned as paperwork confirms the car sports the F70 designation. It also reveals the start of production (SOP) is slated for July of 2024.
Engine options remain unconfirmed, but the document notes there will be a 116i. It’s possible the model could echo the Active Tourer 216i and feature a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder that develops 121 hp (90 kW / 122 PS) and 170 lb-ft (230 Nm) of torque.
We also wouldn’t be surprised to find turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. There could also be a plug-in hybrid variant as well as an M135i with around 302 hp (225 kW / 306 PS) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque.
