Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the long-awaited 2024 Polestar 4. Debuting at the Shanghai Auto Show, this new model marks the brand’s second SUV, following the Polestar 3. However, its sleek appearance blurs the lines between sedan and SUV, making it a unique crossover between the two.”

The new 4 takes design inspiration from the gorgeous Polestar Precept concept car and immediately catches the eye thanks to the dual-blade LED headlights. It also sports a low nose to aid in aerodynamic efficiency and has a front grille that helps add to the dynamism of its design. Compared to the relatively bland front end of the Polestar 2, it’s a big improvement.

You’ll also note that this is no ordinary ‘SUV Coupe’. Indeed, Polestar says it took a fundamentally new approach in designing the model, opting against simply taking an SUV and giving it a faster roofline and instead developing it from the ground up “as a new breed of SUV Coupe.” It is a similar approach to what Hyundai and Kia did with the Ioniq 5 and EV6, although the Polestar 4 is even sleeker.

Polestar has also done something quite out of the ordinary. It has designed the Polestar 4 without a rear window of any kind. It says this “enables a new kind of immersive rear occupant experience” and means the SUV incorporates a high-definition digital rear-view mirror receiving images from a roof-mounted rear camera.

Underpinning the vehicle is Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA). It has a large 2,999 mm (118 inch) wheelbase, just 1 mm less than the Hyundai Ioniq 5, and results in an abundance of interior room. A full-length glass roof comes standard and can be optioned with an electrochromic function. This glass roof extends behind the heads of rear occupants.

Plenty of eco-friendly materials have also been used in the cabin. These include 100% recycled PET, bio-attributed MicroTech vinyl and animal welfare-secured Nappa leather. Inlay carpets are made from recycled PET while the floor carpets are made using ECONYL which includes reclaimed fishing nets. Natural fiber polypropylene is also used in specified door trim panels.

Key features of the cabin include a 14.7-inch Head-Up Display, a 10.2-inch digital driver display, and a 15.4-inch infotainment system powered by Android Automotive OS. A Harman Kardon audio system with 12 speakers is also available while the optional Nappa Pack adds a pair of additional speakers to the headrests of each front seat.

From 272 HP All The Way Up To 544 HP

A handful of different variants will be offered, all of which feature a 102 kWh battery pack. Sitting at the base of the range is the Long Range Single Motor that has a 272 hp and 253 lb-ft (343 Nm) electric motor driving the rear wheels and a targeted range of 373 miles (600 km) on the WLTP cycle. Those seeking some extra performance will be able to order the Long Range Dual Motor variant. It has two electric motors that produce a combined 544 hp and 506 lb-ft (686 Nm) of torque. This model should travel up to 348 miles (560 km) on a charge and includes a disconnect clutch to disengage the front electric motor when not needed to improve efficiency and range.

All variants offer charging at speeds of up to 200 kW DC and 22 kW AC. A vehicle-to-load feature also comes standard, as does a heat pump that can precondition the cabin and battery. The Long Range Dual Motor can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.8 seconds. This variant also has semi-active suspension.

Polestar has fitted the new model with the latest SuperVision Advanced Driver Assistance System from Mobileye. This system has twelve cameras, one radar, and twelve ultrasonic sensors as standard and also includes an advanced driver monitoring system. An optional Pilot Pack is also available and includes automatic lane changes when the driver taps the turn signal.

The Polestar 4 will first launch in China in November 2023 and be produced exclusively at the Geely factory in Hangzhou Bay, China. It will then land in markets including Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific in early 2024 with sales scheduled to ramp up throughout the year. Final pricing details have not been announced but it will start from approximately €60,000 (~$65,500) in Europe.
