Alfa Romeo has had a mixed start to 2023, reporting a significant increase in sales across its home market but shrinking sales in North America.
In Italy, Alfa Romeo remains very popular with sales tripling in the first quarter compared to the first three months of 2022. The new Tonale proved particularly important for the brand and already has a 5% share of its popular segment. Italian customers are also lapping up the Stelvio and Giulia, thanks in part to the recent facelifts that both models underwent and which have not yet been revealed for the U.S. and Canadian markets.
In fact, sales of the Stelvio and Giulia jumped 35% in from February to March this year. Things are not looking so rosy across North America.

The automaker’s recently-announced U.S. Q1 sales results reveal that Alfa Romeo managed to sell 2,390 vehicles in the first three months of the year compared to the 3,291 it sold in Q1 2022. This represents a drop of 27%. Of the Alfa Romeo models sold, 966 were Giulia sedans while 1,424 were the Stelvio. Fortunately for the brand, the impending local arrival of the Tonale should help to boost these numbers.
Over in Canada, Alfa Romeo managed to shift just 167 units in the first quarter, consisting of 44 Giulias and 123 Stelvios. This represents a fall of 15% from Q1 2022. Meanwhile, just 9 new Alfa Romeo vehicles were sold in Mexico in Q1 this year, although that was enough for the Stelvio to achieve a new March sales record.
The new Alfa Romeo Tonale clearly can’t arrive in North America soon enough. After being presented more than a year ago, the Italian marque only started to take pre-orders for the Tonale in late January. All Tonale models sold in the U.S. come standard with a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.3-liter petrol engine up front and an electric motor at the rear. All up, the SUV is good for 285 hp and 350 lb-ft (475 Nm) of torque.
Prices for the entry-level Tonale Ti kick off at $44,995 while the Tonale Veloce is available from $47,495 in the USA.
