It’s hard to top the cool factor of a classic Ferrari, but when you add a Hollywood legend to its list of previous owners, it becomes a collector’s ultimate dream. Such is the case with the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 pictured here, once owned by Steve McQueen. This iconic car is set to go under the hammer by RM Sotheby’s during the upcoming Monterey Car Week this summer.

McQueen purchased this model new in 1967, reportedly taking delivery of the car in San Francisco during the filming of the 1968 movie Bullitt. The vehicle remained in his possession until the early ’70s when it was sold to various owners, including one who modified the car by removing the roof and changing its color to yellow. Fortunately, the Ferrari Classiche department completed an extensive restoration program between 2010 and 2013, returning the car to its original specifications.

Today, the gorgeous Scaglietty-designed bodywork with the long-nose configuration, the single fender-mounted aerodynamic mirror, and the signature air vents, is in impeccable condition. The same applies to the interior, tastefully combining black leather upholstery with light-colored wood for the steering wheel rim.

Predictably, this late example of one of Ferrari’s most beautiful and sought-after classics has been the star of numerous magazine features. It has also been exhibited at the Museo Ferrari in Maranello, and made appearances at the Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza in Italy.

According to RM Sotheby’s, the current value of the classic Ferrari 275 GTB/4 is estimated between $5-7 million. The vehicle fetched $10 million in the summer of 2014, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the final price exceeds the initial estimates. The auction will take place on the weekend of August 18-19 in Monterey, California.
