Ever wondered why your Android device didn’t get the full package of the BMW Digital Key Plus? Worry no more as the automaker finally made it possible to lock, unlock, and start your BMW using your Android phone without taking it out of your pocket.
The Digital Key Plus which was previously compatible only with Apple iOS devices (iPhone / Apple Watch) can now work with Android (version 13.1 or later), bringing BMW closer to its goal of “identical functionality across all platforms”. The next step is to offer the “full range of comfort access functions” on both Apple and Android devices. Earlier this year, the Bavarian company started offering cross-platform sharing of the standard Digital Key functionality via email and messaging applications.

The Android-compatible Digital Key Plus is initially available to all BMW models produced from November 2022, but an over-the-air update will expand its use to vehicles with earlier production dates in the future.
Users of Android devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S23+/Ultra and the Google Pixel 7 Pro can now download and activate it directly on their phone, effectively replacing BMW’s physical key thanks to the ultra-wideband technology (UWB). Users can set up the vehicle to automatically lock/unlock when they approach/walk away, enabling the welcoming lights, and also starting the engine.
BMW owners can also add up to five other users allowing them to enjoy the same benefits using their Android or Apple iOS device. Interestingly, the lock/unlock and start functions work even if the phone’s battery is completely drained, as long as it happened no earlier than five hours ago.
