America’s love of Mustangs has helped propel the pony car into the top position as the world’s best-selling sports car over the last 10 years, according to data gathered by S&P Global Mobility and analyzed by Ford.
Although the model is sold in markets around the globe, the U.S. represents the lion’s share of the model’s sales. According to Ford’s own data, Americans buy 78 percent of all Mustangs globally.
That’s not to say that it’s the only market that loves the model, though. In 2022, sales were up 17 percent in Germany, 14.4 percent in Britain, 14.9 percent in Switzerland, and 7.4 percent in the Middle East.

“We’re proud of the entire Mustang family, what it represents to Ford and especially our passionate Mustang owners and fans,” said Dave Bozeman, VP of Enthusiast Vehicles for Ford Blue. “It’s our commitment to serving Mustang’s global community, from Atlanta to Adelaide and beyond, that has earned Mustang the honor of world’s best-selling sports car for 10 years combined.”
The seventh-generation of the Mustang will have big shoes to fill, therefore, but Ford plans to sell the new model in 100 countries around the world, which will no doubt help it continue the model’s sales success.
The 2024 Mustang will arrive as the nameplate turns 60, marking an important milestone for the car. Available with either a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine or a 5.0-liter V8, the new model will offer customers up to 500 hp (373 kW/507 PS).
The new car will also have special, enthusiast-focused features, like Remote Rev, which allows owners to blip the throttle from outside the car, with the key fob. An available electronic drift brake, which helps initiate slides, will also help entertain Mustang owners for years to come.
