China’s status as the world’s largest car market has naturally drawn the attention of renowned tuners. Accordingly, the ABT China joint venture, which was established in February, recently unveiled its first kit at the Shanghai Auto Show. The package is intended for the GAC Empow, marking ABT’s entry into the Chinese market.
The four-door sedan that is sold under the Trumpchi brand in China, recently received a performance-focused version known as the GAC Empow R. This model has been modified by ABT, marking the first time the German tuner has offered upgrades for a Chinese vehicle.

The GAC Empow R x ABT boasts a distinctive grille and bumper intakes pattern, along with a splitter featuring integrated fins. The side profile showcases matching side skirts and fender flares, emphasizing the new 19-inch alloy wheels. Additionally, the already sporty-looking tail of the Empow R has been upgraded with a fixed rear spoiler, a central-mounted exhaust pipe, and a more prominent diffuser.
ABT chose a black color scheme with red accents for the Empow R x ABT’s exterior, and carried it over to the black upholstery with red details inside the cabin. ABT’s upgrades to the interior are limited to new seat covers, illuminated sill plates, and the ABT emblem on the headrests, central armrest, and floor mats. The Empow R’s digital cockpit already featured unique graphics and the R branding on its bucket seats with integrated headrests.
In stock form, the Chinese model packs a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine that delivers 168 hp (125 kW / 170 PS) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque. However, the new GAC Empow R is fitted with a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that churns out a commendable 265 hp (198 kW / 269 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. The ABT version shares the same performance figures as the Empow R, which is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, delivering power to the front wheels. With a 0-100 km/h (0.62 mph) sprint time of 5.7 seconds, the ABT version is just 0.4 seconds slower than a Hyundai Elantra N. The tuner has yet to confirm any upgrades to the car’s suspension or chassis.
ABT China did not release any pricing details for the tuning package either, but the base GAC Empow has a price range of $14,260-$19,845. The performance kit is set to be launched in China by the end of 2023. Below you can find photos of the stock GAC Empow R in white, so you can judge for yourself if you prefer ABT’s take.
