Owners of the original Land Rover Defender that got tired of the factory-spec small round taillights will soon have the chance to upgrade to a new set of modern-looking LEDs created by Glohh. The GL-2 taillights will be available in late 2023, complying with all regulations as the “first fully integrated combination lamp dedicated to modernizing the Defender”.
Glohh didn’t fully reveal the design of the GL-2 taillights but published a teaser shot with the Defender driving in a water crossing. The new lights appear to be horizontally arranged and quite elongated, taking up a larger area than the original round units of the Defender. The company says that the GL-2 consists of two units – a large one with dual reverse, fog, and position lights, and a smaller one housing additional position lights and turn signals. The latter will also reserve as an auxiliary unit in the unlikely event that the main light is damaged during off-roading.

The new taillights will be compatible with all Land Rover Defender models that were manufactured between 1986 and 2016, which was the final year of production for the classic off-roader. This means they fit the 90 and 110 bodystyle variants, since their tail section was identical, although there is no mention of the pickup models. Land Rover built over 2 million Defenders, with Glohh hoping that some of the owners will be willing to try a styling upgrade with benefits in visibility thanks to modern tech.
Lead designer Dr. Faheem Rafiq, said: “Understanding the contrast between the iconic heritage of the original Defender 90 and 110 shapes with the technological advances of Glohh is core when paying homage to a vehicle that has stood the tests of time of over 70 years”.
The company didn’t announce pricing for the GL-2 for the Defender, but judging from other offerings from their catalog it won’t come cheap. As an example, the GL-5i taillights for the previous-gen Range Rover Sport with dynamic LED graphics retail for $1,199.
