The Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation are set to accelerate their competitiveness in vehicle control system development through the signing of a multilateral Memorandum of Understanding with 17 companies in the industry.

The two South Korean carmakers will form a Model-Based Development consortium and develop what they call advanced Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs) which feature “integrated software that controls the various electronics in the vehicle based on domain centralized architecture.”

Hyundai and Kia say this new model can verify algorithms through virtual simulation to shorten development time. This differs from approaches used in the past when control software had to be implemented to the hardware for it to be verified and improved. The consortium also aims to create software and virtual development solutions that will result in a more organic integration of Hyundai and Kia’s control software.

A total of 19 Korean and international companies are involved in the consortium. These include many of Hyundai Motor Company’s affiliates, including Hyundai Motor, Kia, Hyundai MOBIS, Hyundai WIA, Hyundai KEFICO, Hyundai Transys, Hyundai NGV, and Hyundai AutoEver. Other partners include Vitesco, Robert Bosch, HL Mando, dSPACE, MathWorks, SureSoft Tech, Synopsys, IPG Automotive, ETAS, Vector, and ControlWorks.

This consortium is divided into a ‘development group’ for controllers and software production development, as well as a ‘technology group’ to support specialized technologies.

“We aim to accelerate the Software Defined Vehicle transition through standardization and an open development ecosystem with the close collaboration with industry-leading companies,” executive vice president and head of R&D Planning & Coordination Center of Hyundai Motor and Kia, Yong Wha Kim said. “Technology sharing and collaboration derived from the consortium will be the key factor in the enhancement of the software competitiveness. We look forward to providing a more advanced mobility experience to customers through SDV.”
