A few months ago, it was reported that some U.S. insurance companies would not provide coverage for certain Hyundai and Kia models that were being targeted by thieves using a method popularized on social media platforms such as TikTok. To address this issue, Hyundai has partnered with AAA Insurers to offer insurance options for these models in most states providing a solution for affected customers.
Under the new program, AAA Insurers will issue new and renewal policies for eligible Hyundai customers whose vehicles lack push-button ignitions and immobilizing anti-theft devices.
“We are pleased to collaborate with AAA insurers in the best interest of our shared customers and provide support for those who were having difficulty securing and sustaining auto insurance as a result of the increased criminal activity targeting Hyundai vehicles,” Hyundai Motor America chief executive Randy Parker said.

The rise in thefts of certain Hyundai and Kia models in the U.S. has proven to be a real headache for the car manufacturers over the past couple of years. The problem became particularly troublesome after videos of Hyundai and Kia models being stolen went viral across social media, including TikTok.
The spate of thefts has prompted Hyundai to develop a free anti-theft software upgrade for nearly 4 million vehicles. The upgrade will be available this week and works by modifying certain vehicle control modules on vehicles with a key ignition system. When the doors of the vehicle are locked with the key fob, an ignition kill feature is triggered so vehicles cannot be started in the way they could be in the past.
Hyundai is also working with more than 450 law enforcement agencies across the country to provide no-cost steering locks to affected communities. For vehicles that cannot receive the software upgrade, Hyundai will reimburse owners for the cost of purchasing a steering lock.
AAA Insurers will offer insurance for impacted Hyundai models across all states, except Alaska, Massachusetts, and Washington.
