Almost two weeks ago one of the rarest cars on the planet, a Koenigsegg Regera went up for sale to the highest bidder. Often cars like the Regera end up sold before the general public even sees them so we were anxious to see what the open market would pay for one. It turns out that the high bid didn’t come anywhere near MSRP and ended up failing to meet the reserve price.
The Regera is just one of the many masterpieces to come out of Koenigsegg. Under the rear decklid lies a 5.0-liter quad-cam V8 and three electric motors hooked up to a direct drive transmission. In total, it develops 1,757 hp (1,310 kW) and features a claimed top speed of 251 mph (404 km/h).
That’s a lot of car but with it comes a gigantic price tag. Brand new, this Candy Liquid Blue example with clear-coated exposed carbon fiber and gold-leaf accents had an MSRP of $3,277,636. While it could be argued that no car is worth such an incredibly high sum of money, the fact that this is one of just 80 such examples from 2021 does add to its overall value.

In addition to those factors, this car also has the Ghost package, a desirable feature with dive planes and side skirt winglets. According to Koenigsegg, they add some 20 percent more downforce than one would get with the standard Regera. On top of all that, it has just 615 miles on the odometer.
Despite all of these positives, the highest bid in the auction was $2,740,000, or about $500,000 shy of its MSRP. And we’re guessing that’s even further from its reserve price. Cars in this rarified air rarely trade hands publicly but what little data we could find shows that asking prices are regularly north of $4 million with some reaching up past $5 million.
Perhaps nobody with the cash was interested in this somewhat bright and gaudy color combination. It likely wasn’t a cash allocation problem as the auction went on for two weeks. Hopefully, we’ll see another Regera with a simpler color combo go up for sale soon.
