We’ve updated this article as Hyundai has dropped a new teaser and additional bits of information about their upcoming SUV.
If you thought Hyundai’s global range was already saturated with SUVs, think again. The automaker has confirmed the launch of the Exter, a new compact SUV set to debut in India and positioned below the Venue in its lineup. While early teasers only showed the outline of the Exter’s silhouette, a new official sketch has revealed much of the vehicle’s styling details.
The Exter’s front end is distinguished by H-shaped LEDs for the upper DRLs, which could potentially appear on other future Hyundai SUVs, including the larger Santa Fe. The regular headlights are situated lower within the large bumper intake, similar to the Grandeur/Azera flagship. However, the Exter’s greenhouse and sculpted profile bear a striking resemblance to the Venue, featuring black pillars, roof rails, boxy fenders, and nearly identical mirrors.

Hyundai claims that the name “Exter” represents the themes of outdoor adventures, travel, and leisure. This moniker is fitting, as it bears a striking resemblance to the word “exterior.” While Hyundai has yet to reveal the specific dimensions of the upcoming SUV, it’s expected to be larger than the Casper, which measures 3,595 mm (141.5 inches) in length, and closer in size to the Venue, which measures 3,995 mm (157.3 inches) in length.
Initial reports suggested that the Hyundai Exter would share the K1 platform with several other Hyundai models, including the Indian Grand i10 Nios / Aura, the European i10, and the South Korean Casper. However, the latest teaser has led some to speculate that the Exter may actually be based on the larger K2 platform, which already underpins the Venue small SUV and the Accent sedan, among many other Hyundai models.
According to recent reports, the Hyundai Exter is expected to offer a range of powertrain options, including a naturally aspirated 1.2-liter petrol engine that produces 82 hp (61 kW / 83 PS), as well as a more powerful turbocharged 1.0-liter petrol engine that generates 99 hp (74 kW / 100 PS). Power will be transmitted to the front wheels, with the possibility of a manual or automatic gearbox. While the Exter is expected to debut as a petrol-only model, there are rumors that a CNG option could be added at a later date.
The Hyundai Exter will reportedly enter production in the second half of 2023, closely followed by the market launch in India. At this point, it is not clear if Hyundai plans on exporting the SUV to other countries. Rivals will include budget-friendly options like the Citroen New C3 and the Tata Punch.
