Last week, Nissan revealed that it would be converting an R32 Skyline GT-R to electric power, in an effort to promote its technology. Now, the automaker is showing off the car that will be used in the project.

In a tweet, the automaker posted a 44-second video highlighting the details of the 30-year-old car as it is before the project starts. The car appears to be in good condition for its age. The Gun Gray Metallic paint looks nearly flawless, and the interior appears to be in fine condition, as well. There are, of course, some signs of age, such as in the engine bay, but any imperfections are minor.

While it may make collectors and fans of the classic sad to see a good example of the car be so thoroughly altered, it will no doubt be a good starting point for Nissan. And, after all, a number of electromod kits are fully reversible.

Before you cry foul, it should also be noted that the idea for this project came from a Nissan engineer because of his fondness for the R32 Skyline GT-R, in particular.

“I want to build a more exciting car by adding the latest electrification technology that I am involved with to my favorite car,” the engineer said.

Nissan has yet to reveal what powertrain will replace the car’s original engine, which, from the factory, made 276 hp (206 kW / 280 PS). However, the Ariya’s all-electric powertrain is capable of making up to 389 hp (290 kW / 394 PS) in its most powerful trim, which would doubtless be a fitting swap for this car.

Likely to be a one-off concept for Nissan to show off at auto shows, the “R32 EV,” as it is being called, is one of a series of classic electromods that automakers have recently taken to making. It joins the likes of the Renault 5 Diamant and the Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD Coupe. Nissan has even done this before with the Newbird, a one-off EV made by combining an ’80s Bluebird with the electric powertrain from a Nissan LEAF.
