Rivian’s production and delivery numbers slightly fell during Q1 2023 from the previous quarter but are still much higher than they were 12 months ago.

The car manufacturer has revealed that it produced 9,395 vehicles at its factory in Normal, Illinois in the first quarter of this year. This is 268% higher than the number of models built in Q1 2022 but was down 625 units from Q4 2022. Meanwhile, a total of 7,946 vehicles were delivered to customers. That is a 548% increase year-over-year but 108 units less than Q4 last year.

The small drop-off in production and deliveries is likely because Rivian rushed to ramp up production in the final stages of 2022. In addition, Rivian paused production on its commercial van line to incorporate new battery-pack technology.

“These figures remain in line with the company’s expectations,” the company said in a press release. Moreover, it is “on track to deliver on the 50,000 annual production guidance previously provided.”

Rivian has not broken down the production and delivery numbers for each model.

The EV startup has a lot on its agenda. In March, it was revealed that Rivian is in talks with Amazon to change the terms of its delivery van deal. The deal, first announced in 2019, will see Amazon buy 100,000 EDVs from Rivian this decade. However, after Amazon decided to order 10,000 units for 2023, slightly lower than Rivian was expecting, it is reportedly keen to also sell the EDV to other customers.

Most recently, it was revealed that Rivian had started to ask members of its engineering team who work remotely to relocate to central Illinois or the company’s headquarters in Irvine, California. Rivian believes the move will help it to improve efficiency and comes after the carmaker burned through $6.6 billion in cash last year.
