A legend in its own time, the Porsche 917 earned its reputation on track, became immortalized in film, and can now do its part to improve your home. This example may not be an original racecar, but it is the next best thing: a racetrack.

For, you see, this isn’t a Porsche 917 at all, but a copy of the car that opens up to reveal a slot car racetrack inspired by the Circuit de la Sarthe, the racetrack where the car became a legend and earned victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Featuring a clamshell design, the top of the Porsche opens sideways to reveal a racetrack that is 13-feet-long by six-feet-wide (3.9 x 1.8 m). Although it’s aesthetically inspired by Le Mans, the track shape is more akin to the Suzuka short track, with its S curves.

The track surface is hand-painted, and the loving details can be felt throughout. The Le Mans-like details include a Dunlop bridge, the Esso oil man, and the Martini barn. Billboards for familiar brands like Shell, Agip, Champion, Girling, Bilstein, Solex, and more can also be found around the track.

It’s all a lovely homage to classic Le Mans, and it only gets better from there. Included in the sale are 19 slot cars. Highlights of the collection include a GT40 (modified to act as a camera car), a Ferrari 512 Coda Lunga, a Lola T70, and several Porsche 917s, one bearing the same Gulf Livery as the car that contains it, and another with the famed Martini livery.

Although the larger car that contains the track is fake, it is an impressive sculpture. The body is made of a composite material, and at the back there are exhaust pipes and a transmission case. The brake and headlights also work, and the body opens up electrically at the push of a button.

Unsurprisingly, all that cool comes at a price. More specifically, $205,000, which is what the winning bidder paid at the Bring a Trailer auction.
