Volvo introduced the updated C40 and XC40 Recharge earlier this year, and now they’re coming stateside as 2024 models.
The big news is the addition of rear-wheel drive variants, which feature an 82 kWh battery pack and an in-house developed electric motor that produces 248 hp (185 kW / 252 PS). While the powertrain doesn’t sound too remarkable, the crossovers will become the first rear-wheel drive Volvos in America in 25 years.
That isn’t the only notable thing about them as the C40 Recharge has an EPA estimated range of 297 miles (478 km). That drops to 293 miles (472 km) for the XC40 Recharge, but both have a 200 kW DC fast charging capability and this enables them to go from a 10-80% charge in approximately 28 minutes.

The Twin Motor variants haven’t been forgotten as they feature a new dual-motor all-wheel drive system. There’s an asynchronous electric motor up front, which produces 147 hp (110 kW / 149 PS) and only activates as needed. It’s joined by a rear-mounted electric motor that develops 255 hp (190 kW / 259 PS) and was developed in-house.
This gives the models a combined output of 402 hp (300 kW / 408 PS), which is the same as their predecessors. They also retain the same 78 kWh battery pack and 150 kW DC fast charging capability, but they can now travel 21 miles (34 km) farther thanks to the new motors. As a result, the 2024 C40 Recharge Twin Motor has an EPA estimated range of 257 miles (414 km) while the XC40 Recharge Twin Motor can travel 254 miles (409 km).
Besides the powertrain updates, the Twin Motor variants have new 19-inch alloy wheels with an aerodynamically optimized design.
