Spy photographers have snapped the Audi A6 e-tron on multiple occasions, but now we’re getting a glimpse of its ICE-powered counterpart.
While the model was originally expected to get a facelift, it appears these are actually mules for the next-generation A6, which could adopt the A7 moniker as Audi will reportedly use even numbers for EVs and odd numbers for ICE vehicles.
Given that these are mules, it’s not surprising they look familiar. However, a closer inspection reveals a handful of changes including prototype exhausts and modified bumpers. The S6 / S7 mule is the most interesting of the bunch as it features high voltage warning stickers and a rear charging port, which indicates it has a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Spy photographers also got a glimpse inside and it’s a hodgepodge of parts as the mule has one foot in the future and another in the past. That being said, the cabin appears to echo the A6 e-tron concept as it has a digital instrument cluster, a freestanding infotainment system, and a minimalist shifter.
Little else is known about the car at this point, but it will likely be Audi’s last mid-size sedan and wagon with an internal combustion engine. As the automaker has previously announced, “starting in 2026, Audi will only introduce all-electric cars to the global market.”
Engine options remain a mystery, but it’s clear the A6 or A7 will embrace electrification. Besides the plug-in hybrid S6 successor, we can see warning stickers on the regular sedan. Since that mule lacks a charging port, it likely has a conventional hybrid powertrain.
