BMW has set the stage for the reveal of its highly anticipated all-new, all-electric i5 sedan, announcing that the vehicle will make its debut on May 24. In addition to the launch date, the German automaker has released a series of social media posts that provide a glimpse into some of the i5’s features.

In keeping with the modern BMW aesthetic, the upcoming i5 electric sedan will feature a bold and imposing grille that’s further highlighted by, well, LED lights. Similar to the i7, the new midsize sedan will keep the brand’s distinctive kidney grille shape, despite not needing the air for an internal combustion engine.

A second post, shared by BMW and its chief designer, Domagoj Dukec, focuses on the interior of the i5. It shows a strip of accent lighting that runs along the dash and extends to the doors cards. The light-up trim will apparently be quite clever, as it can be seen transitioning from red to blue as a wave washing across the dash.

The camera then pans back, to show a large, widescreen infotainment display. As we already know, the i5 will be a tech showcase for the brand, which has promised that it will be equipped with incredible processing power.

This will extend beyond the display screens and into the actual functioning of the vehicle. A new version of BMW’s adaptive dampers will react to the road in real time, rather than relying on mathematical models to guess at what should happen next. That, the automaker says, will give the new electric sedan 7-Series-like comfort with 3-Series-like agility.

It will also come with the latest advanced driver assistance features that can change lanes if the driver glances at the mirror. I guess the brand assumes its drivers don’t just fail to use their turn signals, they also refuse to check their mirrors at regular intervals. For that rare BMW driver who does use the signals, that can also initiate a lane changing maneuver without requiring the driver’s hands to be on the wheel.

BMW has also promised that the new i5 will get a wagon variant, as well as a high-powered M version. Much remains to be learned about the new electric vehicle, but all will be revealed on May 24, when BMW finally takes the wraps off the new car.

BMW fans can look forward to more than just the standard i5 electric sedan, as the automaker has promised a wagon variant and ahigh-powered M version as well. Much remains to be learned about the new electric vehicle, but all will be revealed on May 24, when BMW finally takes the wraps off the new car.
