BMW has so many divisive cars in its current line-up that it’s easy to forget it still builds some very attractive models, like the Z4. So, when BMW unveiled a one-off Shooting Brake version of the Z4 at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy, it really got enthusiasts excited.

Inspired by the concept, designer Khyzyl Saleem has taken a stock standard BMW M4 and made it a little more striking. However, rather than turning it into a Shooting Brake as you may expect, he has simply mimicked the concept’s dark silver paint finish with light gold accents.

Alterations made to the M4 start at the front end where Saleem has ditched the car’s ugly coffin-style kidney grilles and replaced them with smaller grilles more akin to those of the Z4, albeit even smaller. These grilles have shrouds finished in a light shade of gold and the sports car also rocks a much more pronounced front splitter.

Changes made to the car continue along the sides where its easily-identifiable wheels now have the same light gold finish as the front grille surrounds. The ride height has also been lowered and light gold side window surrounds also catch the eye.

The reception to the design of the current-generation M3 and M4 has been mixed but with the exception of the massive kidney grilles, we actually think the cars look quite nice. With a tweaked grille like the one designed by Saleem, or the one currently being sold by Vorsteiner, the M4 can turn heads for all the right reasons.

As for the Concept Touring Coupe that inspired this design, BMW currently refers to it as a one-off but BMW Group design director Adrian van Hooydonk has admitted that if there’s enough interest in the car, BMW may look to build approximately 50 units for customers.
