While you may not be familiar with the name Candela, the Swedish company has been building electric boats and hydrofoils for quite some time and has just launched a special version of its C-8 boat with Polestar.
The special edition model is known simply as the C-8 Polestar Edition and is finished exclusively in a new shade of light grey. It also features a handful of gold-painted accents, including the hydrofoils, while the cabin is trimmed in new light-colored materials. Indeed, the special C-8 has specifically designed seat upholstery that is said to be exceptionally comfortable.
Watch: Candela C-8 Can Go Twice As Far As Other Electric Boats Thanks To Polestar Batteries
Like the standard Candela C-8, the Polestar Edition is powered by the same 69 kWh battery pack as the standard-range Polestar 2. It also features the same fast-charging technology as the 2 and can travel 57 nautical miles on a charge at a cruising speed of 22 knots.
The Polestar-sourced battery feeds a 75 kWh electric direct drive pod motor dubbed the Candela C-POD. Making the C-8 different from a regular boat is that the entire hull sits above the water once it gets going as it soars on computer-guided hydrofoils that reduce energy consumption by up to 80% compared to a normal boat. Not only does sitting on foils improve efficiency but it also results in a near-silent ride and one far smoother than a traditional boat.
“Candela’s hydrofoil technology is a paradigm shift for sustainable performance in the marine industry,” head of Design at Polestar, Maximillian Missoni described. “Like the first time driving an electric car, you instantly feel that this is the future when the boat ‘takes off’ – and now with the special gold details that we so proudly exhibit on our cars.”
As you may have guessed, the boat isn’t cheap. In fact, prices start at €400,000 in Europe or $450,000 in the U.S. and deliveries aren’t scheduled to commence until June 2024.
