Update: We added new spy shots of a similarly camouflaged Hyundai i30 Fastback prototype
Camouflaged prototypes of the Hyundai i30 in hatchback and fastback forms were caught testing on public roads suggesting that the VW Golf rival might be due for a second facelift in the near future.
The current third generation of the Hyundai i30 was introduced back in 2016, with a mid-lifecycle update appearing in 2020. Following rumors about the possible discontinuation of the ICE-powered hatchback and despite the shrinking market, Hyundai’s European boss recently revealed there are plans for a new generation. From the new spy shots though, it seems that the automaker will opt for another update, keeping the model relevant for a few more years.

Most of the hatchback prototype’s bodywork was covered in vinyl, with the tail completely hidden from sight. Still, the LED headlights appear to be identical to the higher trims of the current model, as with the taillights. The outline of the wide grille looks similar to the sporty N-Line but the rest of the bumper could be redesigned. Of course, this could be an early prototype fitted with dummy parts that might be replaced in the future. The sleeker i30 Fastback is expected to benefit from similar updates, as with the more practical i30 Wagon.
Interestingly, the interior was covered, which could mean that the automaker is working on bigger changes compared to the rather subtle first facelift. Our guess would be an overhauled dashboard with a modernized digital cockpit, bringing the i30 more in line with the rest of the lineup alongside new options for the upholstery.

In terms of powertrains, expect a heavier dose of electrification with more efficient mild-hybrids and possibly a full self-charging hybrid option. Unfortunately for hot hatch aficionados, the i30 N is doomed to be axed when the Euro 7 regulations come into play, as the turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine doesn’t have the potential to comply.
Hyundai might be working to expand its Ioniq series of EVs but doesn’t neglect its ICE-powered range as proven by the recently updated i20 supermini in Europe, plus the Elantra and Sonata sedans in Korea. The i30 is one of the oldest surviving models in Hyundai’s lineup, with the mechanically-related Kona SUV recently getting an all-new second generation. The compact hatchback faces strong competition from the soon-to-be facelifted VW Golf, plus the much newer Peugeot 308 and Opel Astra siblings.
