Hyundai’s N performance division has built some of the best bang-for-your-buck performance cars over the past few years but it is embarking on a brave new future with the forthcoming Ioniq 5, its first EV.

Our spy photographers have snapped multiple prototypes being tested over the past couple of years and more recently, Hyundai itself has started to tease the production version of the Ioniq 5 N ahead of its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this July.

Our spy photographers spotted an Ioniq 5 N with skin-tight camouflage that curiously ran out of battery, providing us to take a closer look at the stranded test car.

We’re told that the Ioniq 5 N broke down near one of Hyundai’s development centers and that the engineers had to open up the bonnet to connect a small battery charger to get it running again. With the hood open, we can see a piece of large black plastic sitting in place of the storage area of the standard Ioniq 5. This piece reads N E-Active Sound on the top and appears to be hiding the artificial sound generator that the car will use.

Beyond this, these images don’t show us anything about the Ioniq 5 that we haven’t seen already. For example, we can see that alterations have been made to the front fascia with the fitment of a new grille. Hyundai has also equipped the car with beefed-up brakes and new wheels, while also extending the side skirts. The rear also benefits from a new bumper with a diffuser, a larger rooftop spoiler, and a new rear window wiper.

Driving the Ioniq 5 N will be a very similar powertrain to the Kia EV6 GT meaning it will have a pair of powerful electric motors and a 77.4 kWh battery pack. Whereas the Kia is good for 576 hp and 545 lb-ft (738 Nm) of torque, the Hyundai is tipped to deliver around 600 hp.
