Toyota launched an all-new Yaris Cross in Indonesia, which is unrelated to the B-SUV with the same name currently offered in Europe, Japan, and Australia. The model adopts styling cues from the larger RAV4 and the Highlander, offering the option between petrol and hybrid powertrains.

The new Yaris Cross will slot between the Raize and the Corolla Cross in Toyota’s SUV range in the Indonesian market. The large grille and aggressive headlights at the front are reminiscent of the Highlander, while the boxy wheel arches, toned-up rear shoulders, greenhouse, and taillights send strong RAV4 vibes.

Toyota brags about the roominess of the five-seater cabin which is comparable with vehicles from one segment above in some aspects. Furthermore, the battery on the hybrid is mounted under the rear seats so it doesn’t compromise luggage space which is allegedly the largest in its class.

The dashboard looks fairly simple but modern, with a 10.1-inch free-standing display for the infotainment and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. The equipment can include ambient lighting, a wireless charging pad, a panoramic sunroof, an electrically operated tailgate, and the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS kit.

The Indonesian-spec Toyota Yaris Cross is reportedly based on the DNGA platform and measures 4,310 mm long (169.9 inches), 1,770 mm wide (69.7 inches), and 1,615 mm (63.6 inches) long with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm (103.1 inches). Those numbers make it 130 mm (5.1 inches) longer than the EU-spec TNGA-based Yaris Cross.

The model is available with two powertrain options – petrol and hybrid. The naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter Dual VVT-i four-cylinder petrol engine produces 105 hp (78 kW / 106 PS) and 138 Nm (102 lb-ft) of torque. It can be mated to either a five-speed manual or a CVT gearbox, with both sending power to the front axle.

As for the more efficient self-charging hybrid, it combines a 1.5-liter engine with an electric motor, a lithium-ion battery pack, and a CVT. The electric motor makes 79 hp (59 kW / 80 PS) and 141 Nm (104 lb-ft) while the combustion engine is good for 90 hp (67 kW / 91 PS) and 121 Nm (89 lb-ft). The combined output is 110 hp (82 kW / 112 PS), which is slightly lower than EU-spec Toyota hybrids, and is exclusively transmitted to the front axle.
