Tesla is looking to convince Texas residents to pick up the keys to a new Model 3 by offering them one year of free overnight vehicle charging. There are a couple of catches, however.

To be eligible, Texas residents must live at an address that has a retail choice in the state and must order and collect their new Model 3 between May 26, 2023 and June 30, 2023. Furthermore, they must sign up with the carmaker’s retail electricity provider, Tesla Electric, and have to opt for the Home Charging Plan.

There’s another eligibility hurdle Texans will need to jump to qualify. Currently, Tesla Electric is only available to Tesla Powerwall owners so if you don’t have a Powerwall, you’ll have to get one.

The Tesla Electric Home Charging Plan normally charges Tesla owners $30 a month for unlimited overnight home charging so across a year, the incentive represents a saving of $360. It’s also worth noting that the free overnight charging is only available between 10pm and 6am.

Tesla Electric has been operating since December 2022 in the Lone Star State and is able to offer cheap overnight charging through partnerships with other electricity providers that have excess power at night due to lower demand and strong wind power, InsideEVs reports.

It remains to be seen how many people will be convinced to buy a Model 3 because of a $360 saving, however. Then there’s also the fact that Tesla is currently hard at work developing a facelifted version of the Model 3, currently known as ‘Project Highland.’ While it is not yet known when the updated EV will launch, some reports claim it could hit production as soon as September, meaning anyone who is won over by this deal could soon have an outdated Model 3.
