Back in the ’80s, there were plenty of sedans and hatchbacks that were given a bed, and turned into little pickup trucks. Down in Brazil, some customizers decided to see what would happen if you did the opposite, and came up with the Ford F-1000 Deserter SR XK.

The sedan is based on the Ford F-1000, a pickup built on the F-100 platform that was sold in Brazil between 1979 and 1998. The name was selected to indicate to buyers that the truck could carry 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs).

Meanwhile, SR Veículos Especials decided to try its hand at doing some coachwork on the truck, and came up with the Deserter. While some appear to have been sold as Chevrolet Avalanche-style pickups, this particular model got a full trunk, turning the pickup truck into a massive four-door sedan.

Despite featuring a familiar (and very literal) three-box sedan design, the truck-like proportions are impossible to ignore. There’s just something about the height that leaves no doubt that this is a truck with a trunk, and not just a big sedan—mind you, with the current interest in crossover coupes, this design looks more prescient today than it ever has in the past.

For sale in Brazil, the ad does not specify which engine powers this truck, but the options are decidedly old school. The F-1000 was initially offered with a 3.9-liter, four-cylinder, eight-valve diesel engine that made just 83 hp (62 kW/84 PS) and propelled it up to a top speed of 120 km/h (74 mph). Although engine options progressed over the course of the truck’s lifespan, it was never endowed with an overabundance of horsepower.

Despite the unusual appearance and the scant power, the Ford F-1000 Deserter SR XK was considered something of a collector’s item, with some buyers reportedly buying them and mothballing them immediately to keep mileage low.

This example, which is in good working order, is being sold on OLX.com.br with an asking price of R$119,000, or the equivalent of $23,757 USD at current exchange rates.
